California = 52% douche

Despite the other good news last night, I can't be happy this morning knowing that California (CALIFORNIA, for fucks sake!) has voted to strip fundamental civil rights from gay and lesbian Americans.

Who was behind this? Here's a paragraph from a story in the LA Times [emphasis added for certain readers of this blog]:

On the other side were an array of conservative organizations, including the Knights of Columbus, Focus on the Family and the American Family Assn., along with tens of thousands of small donors, including many who responded to urging from Mormon, Catholic and evangelical clergy.

More later...

  • On a friend's Facebook page, I was saying that it was odd to feel elated and bitterly disappointed at the same time. Later, I got an email from the NGLTF titled "Bittersweet" and I thought, "Yeah, that's the word."

    Maybe it's my perspective as a lesbian, but I just don't understand why so many people apparently feel that it is necessary to strip rights away from gay people.

  • I recently finished reading a book by George Lakoff titled Don't Think of an Elephant which I think explains fairly well what the battle over same-sex marriage is really all about.

    I plan on posting about it soon, as I alluded in my post tonight. I'm not sure it explains why everyday people - especially Californians - voted to strip rights from a minority but it certainly has clarified, for me, just what the "culture war" is all about.
